What is the CAPM® Certification? Requirements, Cost and More
The CAPM® certification, which stands for Certified Associate in Project Management®, is intended to assist applicants in developing the abilities required for entry-level project management employment. It could serve as the initial step toward a career in the area.
Read this blog to understand what the CAPM® certification is, its requirements, training courses and much more.
What is the CAPM® Certification?
An accreditation for project management entry-level roles, the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® certification is run by the Project Management Institute (PMI), one of the most prestigious project management organizations in the world.
It costs $225 for PMI members to take and $300 for non-PMI members and can be used as a stepping stone to the Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification.
CAPM® Requirements
You must satisfy the requirements listed below in order to register for the CAPM® exam:
- A certificate from senior high school, a pre-degree certificate, or a pre-university certificate
- Completed 23 hours of project management training prior to the test
How can I fulfill my 23 hours of project management education?
You can complete this prerequisite by enrolling in a variety of project management courses, both online and in person, such as GoROHO’s Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® Program. You may also enroll in PMI’s Project Management Basics course.
Is the CAPM® Worth it?
The CAPM® is typically regarded as a foundational qualification in project management. So how can you know if the effort will be worthwhile? Here are some things to think about.
CAPM® Salary and Jobs
The CAPM® can help you get ready for entry-level project management positions like associate and junior project managers.
Here’s a table of job opportunities available after the CAPM® and their respective salary ranges in the U.S.A according to payscale.
Job Title | Range |
Project Coordinator, Information Technology (IT) | Range:$43k – $84k |
Associate Project Manager (Unspecified Type / General) | Range:$48k – $72k |
Project Manager, Operations | Range:$54k – $93k |
Project Analyst | Range:$48k – $79k |
CAPM® vs. PMP®
The PMI also oversees the Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification program. The PMP® is regarded as a professional-level certificate, in contrast to the CAPM®, which is typically perceived as an entry-level qualification. With over a million PMP® holders globally, the PMP® is also much more well-known than the CAPM®.
Here is a brief breakdown of the key differences.
Basis of Difference | CAPM® | PMP® |
Who it’s it for? | Entry-level project managers | Those with at least 3 years of project management experience |
Requirements | Secondary degree, plus 23 hours of project management education | 35 hours of project management training (can be replaced with CAPM®), and 36 months of experience leading projects with a four-year degree or 60 months with a secondary degree |
Cost | $225 – the CAPM® exam fee if you are a PMI member. Non-PMI members pay $300 | $555 for those without PMI membership. PMI members, on the other hand, pay $405 |
Exam | 3 hours, 150 questions | 3 hours 50 minutes, 180 questions |
Should I get the CAPM® or PMP®?
If you have little to no project management expertise, earning the CAPM® certification might be more advantageous as an entry-level credential. If you want to learn more about this area or take on additional project management-related responsibilities at work, it might be a wonderful icebreaker. Your choice should be based on your own objectives. It’s a good idea to educate yourself on the costs of the exams as well as your alternative possibilities.
It will be worthwhile to think about the PMP® if you have at least three years of project management experience.
